Throwback Thursday! From 2007. Custom designed ring with client's yellow trillion diamond (6.10mmX5.97mmX3.93mm) set in a platinum bezel setting with 18K yellow gold ball accents. Mokume of 18K yellow gold, 14K palladium white gold, 14K red gold and sterling silver. Great style for a large diamond!

It's difficult to believe it's been 2 years since Jim has been able to teach a mokume class. Jim and Chris Ploof taught at New Approach School for Jewelers in TN in October 2019. COVID then put a stop on teaching in 2020/2021. Fingers crossed 2022 allows for more great mokume classes! Let us know if you want information on future mokume classes.

Gemstone Tuesday. October's modern birthstone is tourmaline. Tourmaline comes in a range of colors. Some of the most popular are pink and red rubellites, emerald green "chrome" tourmalines, neon green and blue-to-violet "paraiba" tourmalines. Besides being one of October's birthstone it is also the gemstone to celebrate 8th wedding anniversaries. It is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Color is one of the prime factors affecting price. The most desirable are those with highly saturated color without black areas...though preference is really a personal choice. A client celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary by having us make his wife this mokume pendant with a Pixel Cut tourmaline.

Gemstone Tuesday. Opal is the traditional birthstone for October. Since it is only 5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale it is not recommended as a center stone for a ring worn daily/frequently. Precious opals have incredible color combinations. Red, orange, yellow, blue and green are the main colors seen in different opals. If you wish to have opal in a ring and plan to wear frequently an inlay of opal may be a better option than a center stone. A client had an an idea for a ring utilizing inlay of opal.

Very special, but also very delicate. Opals are soft and crack easily compared to most other gemstones, unless enhanced with other materials. But then some people can probably afford another ring when the first becomes chipped.

Happy Friday Everyone! Just a question to start the weekend. Both these rings are in our "A" metal combination of 18K yellow gold, 14K palladium white gold, 14K red gold and sterling silver and are etched. Which do you prefer: domed or flat on the outside of the ring?
Difficult to choose. For me, it might depend on which finger I would wear it
